چکیده

Several services today are annotated with points of interest (PoIs) such as “coffee shop”, “park”, etc. A region of interest (RoI) is a neighborhood that contains PoIs relevant to the user. In this paper, we study the scenario where a user wants to identify the best RoI in a city. The user expresses relevance through a set of keywords denoting PoIs. Ideally, the RoI should be small enough in size such that the user can conveniently explore the PoIs. On the other hand, it should be as relevant as possible. How does one balance the importance of size versus relevance? To a user exploring the RoI on foot, size is more critical. However, for a user equipped with a vehicle, relevance is a more important factor. In this paper, we solve this dilemma through skyline subgraph queries on keyword-embedded road networks. Skyline subgraphs subsume the choice of optimization function for an RoI since the optimal RoI for any rational user is necessarily a part of the skyline set. Our analysis reveals that the problem of computing the skyline set is NP-hard. We overcome the computational bottleneck by proposing a polynomial-time approximation algorithm called SkyGraph. To further expedite the running time, we develop an index structure, Partner Index, that drastically prunes the search space and provides up to 3 orders of magnitude speed-up on real road networks over the baseline approach. The datasets and executables are available at http://www.cse.iitd.ac.in/~sayan/software.html.

An Algorithm for Retrieving Skyline Points based on User Specified Constraints using the Skyline Ordering

Given a multidimensional data set, a skyline query returns the interesting points that are not dominated by other points. The actual cardinality (s) of a skyline query result may vary substantially from the desired result cardinality (k). An approach called skyline ordering is used that forms a skyline based partitioning of a given data set, it provides an ordering among the partitions. The con...

Efficiently Evaluating Skyline Queries on RDF Databases

Skyline queries are a class of preference queries that compute the pareto-optimal tuples from a set of tuples and are valuable for multi-criteria decision making scenarios. While this problem has received significant attention in the context of single relational table, skyline queries over joins of multiple tables that are typical of storage models for RDF data has received much less attention....

Skyline with Presorting: Theory and Optimizations

There has been interest recently in skyline queries, also called Pareto queries, on relational databases. Relational query languages do not support search for “best” tuples, beyond the order by statement. The proposed skyline operator allows one to query for best tuples with respect to any number of attributes as preferences. In this work, we explore what the skyline means, and why skyline quer...

Skyline Diagram: Finding the Voronoi Counterpart for Skyline Queries

Skyline queries are important in many application domains. In this paper, we propose a novel structure Skyline Diagram, which given a set of points, partitions the plane into a set of regions, referred to as skyline polyominos. All query points in the same skyline polyomino have the same skyline query results. Similar to kth-order Voronoi diagram commonly used to facilitate k nearest neighbor (...

Efficient Parallel Spatial Skyline Evaluation Using MapReduce

This research presents an advanced MapReduce-based parallel solution to efficiently address spatial skyline queries on large datasets. In particular, given a set of data points and a set of query points, we first generate the convex hull of the query points in the first MapReduce phase. Then, we propose a novel concept called independent regions, for parallelizing the process of spatial skyline...
